LS Cable & System Begins HVDC Cable Production
The LS Cable & System HVDC cable production milestone marks an important achievement. LS Cable & System (LS C&S) has started mass production of 525 kV high‑voltage direct current cables at its Donghae‑si plant in Gangwon‑do, South Korea. Learn more at https://www.lscns.com.
Only a few companies worldwide have commercialized cables at this voltage. LS C&S will supply 525 kV DC cables for TenneT’s 2 GW grid connection projects, BalWin4 and LanWin1. These systems will strengthen Europe’s power infrastructure and support its growing renewable energy network.
Record‑Breaking Contract With TenneT
In May, LS Cable & System signed a long‑term supply deal with TenneT, Europe’s main grid operator. The deal is the largest single order ever secured by a cable maker. It highlights LS C&S’s expanding influence in Europe’s renewable energy transition.
HVDC cables transmit large amounts of power over long distances with minimal losses. They are ideal for offshore wind and interconnector projects that link national grids. The European Union targets 60 GW of offshore wind by 2030 and 300 GW by 2050, driving strong growth in HVDC demand.
LS EcoEnergy Expands Into the United Kingdom
Meanwhile, LS EcoEnergy, a subsidiary of LS C&S, is negotiating to secure land for a submarine cable facility in the United Kingdom. CEO Lee Sang‑ho said the project aims to support customers in the U.K. and nearby European nations.
The proposed site covers 154,711 square meters at the Port of Tyne in northeast England. LS EcoEnergy is developing the project with Global Interconnection Group (GIG), a British energy investor planning a major offshore grid link between the U.K. and Iceland.
Addressing Europe’s Rising Cable Demand
Europe’s offshore wind capacity continues to expand quickly. However, the supply of submarine cables lags behind the region’s ambitious power goals. As a result, governments are increasing subsidies, while security‑based trade restrictions favor regional production. These changes strengthen LS C&S’s plan to establish a long‑term European base.
Advancing a Global Subsea Cable Strategy
LS Cable & System continues to grow its subsea business across North America, Europe, and Asia. Through collaboration with LS EcoEnergy and LS Marine Solutions, the company aims to deliver advanced cable networks that power a cleaner, more resilient global energy future.
