Prysmian Group has finalized a €1.9 billion contract with Eastern Green Link 2 Limited (EGL2). The project will strengthen the U.K.’s renewable energy grid by sending clean electricity from Scotland to England.
This major project partners SSEN Transmission and National Grid Electricity Transmission plc. Together, they plan to create a crucial north-to-south power connection called Eastern Green Link 2. It will be among the first U.K. cable systems to use 525 kV HVDC (High-Voltage Direct Current) technology with extruded XLPE insulation. This advanced system will move renewable power more efficiently across long distances.
Prysmian will design, manufacture, install, test, and commission the HVDC cable system. It will carry up to 2 GW of electricity—enough energy for about two million homes.
Hakan Ozmen, EVP Transmission BU at Prysmian, said the project is a milestone for the U.K.’s clean energy future. He explained that this “electrical superhighway” will unlock Scotland’s renewable resources and boost the U.K.’s energy capacity.
Last year, Prysmian became the exclusive preferred bidder for the project. Since then, the company has remained committed to ensuring reliable cable supply and technical excellence. The new system is expected to start operating in 2029. When complete, it will help the U.K. deliver more clean power, faster and more efficiently.
