Prysmian Expands Optical Cable Manufacturing to Support Telstra InfraCo Network
The Prysmian Australia Optical Cable Plant Expansion represents a major investment by Prysmian Group to increase optical fiber production capacity in Dee Why, New South Wales. The expansion supports Telstra InfraCo in delivering Australia’s intercity fiber network—an initiative designed to boost national connectivity and future-proof digital infrastructure.
Strengthening Australia’s Intercity Fiber Network
The Prysmian Australia expansion will enhance the company’s ability to produce advanced fiber optic cable designed for Telstra’s intercity network, which aims to improve Australia’s digital infrastructure. Prysmian will manufacture state-of-the-art, locally made optical fiber cables at its Dee Why facility to support the project’s expanding scale.
Telstra InfraCo’s intercity fiber network connects Australia’s major population centers and is designed to handle future demand for faster, more reliable data transmission. Prysmian has supported Telstra since 1998, investing more than A$20 million in the NSW facility over time.
Continued Partnership with Telstra InfraCo
Brendon Riley, CEO of Telstra InfraCo, emphasized the network’s importance: “This intercity fiber project will future-proof Australia’s connectivity for the next 20 years. We’ve already laid hundreds of kilometers of cable and are planning additional routes connecting all mainland capitals.”
Meanwhile, Frederick Persson, Executive Vice President of Digital Solutions at Prysmian, said, “Our partnership with Telstra represents two years of research and innovation. Together, we’ve developed a world-leading optical fiber cable that meets today’s capacity and latency demands while preparing for tomorrow’s challenges.”
Prysmian Australia Expansion Delivers Sustainable, High-Performance Design
The new Prysmian optical fiber cable is 59% smaller and 54% lighter than the previous design, reducing CO₂ emissions by about 35,000 metric tons across production and transport. This sustainable innovation aligns with Prysmian’s global focus on reducing carbon impact and delivering environmentally responsible solutions.
Furthermore, Prysmian has invested in three key production areas to expand output capacity at its Dee Why facility. This upgrade strengthens local manufacturing, research, and development capabilities while reinforcing Australia’s self-sufficiency in high-quality telecommunications infrastructure.
Enhancing Innovation Through Local Manufacturing
Prysmian Australia continues to evolve its operations to maintain its regional leadership in telecom cables and fiber solutions. With world-class R&D, logistics, and manufacturing expertise, the company remains Telstra’s exclusive strategic cable supplier—one of only a few globally trusted customers under Prysmian’s network of strategic partnerships.
