Prysmian Expands Its Role in Germany’s Energy Transition
Prysmian PowerLink Srl, a subsidiary of the Prysmian Group, has secured new high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cable contracts worth about €1.1 billion from 50Hertz Transmission GmbH. The deal strengthens Prysmian’s presence in Germany’s offshore wind market and supports the country’s clean energy goals.
Supporting Germany’s Offshore Wind Growth
The award is part of 50Hertz’s long-term EPCI (Engineering, Procurement, Construction, and Installation) framework. It covers two key projects under Lot 2—the NOR-11-1 submarine link and the DC31 underground cable connection—along with a framework agreement under Lot 7.
Together, these projects move Germany closer to its national goal of 70 GW of installed offshore wind capacity by 2045. They also help deliver renewable energy from the North Sea to homes and industries in eastern and southern regions of the country.
Project Details and Scope
Under Lot 2, Prysmian manages all EPCI phases—engineering, procurement, construction, and installation. The company will also test and commission both projects. Combined, they will include over 1,000 km of HVDC cables.
-
NOR-11-1 is a 525 kV HVDC submarine and underground system with a 2 GW transmission capacity. It links the offshore wind area N-11-1 to Germany’s grid near Heide/West.
-
DC31 is a 525 kV HVDC underground cable project that transfers power from Heide/West to Klein Rogahn.
Both cable systems feature two single-core copper cables with XLPE insulation, a metallic return conductor, and fiber-optic lines for advanced monitoring.
Manufacturing Across Europe
To deliver these systems, Prysmian will use its advanced production facilities across several European countries. The submarine power cables will come from Pikkala, Finland, and Arco Felice, Italy. Meanwhile, the fiber-optic cables will be made in Nordenham, Germany. In addition, factories in France will supply cables for the DC31 project and the onshore section of NOR-11-1.
Long-Term Collaboration Under Lot 7
Prysmian will also act as a key supplier under Lot 7, which gives 50Hertz the option to place future orders for 525 kV offshore or onshore cable systems. This framework covers up to 2,700 km of cable length and provides flexibility for Germany’s future energy infrastructure expansion.
Advancing Germany’s Clean Energy Future
“We are proud to expand our partnership with 50Hertz on these critical projects,” said Hakan Ozmen, Executive Vice President of Projects BU at Prysmian Group. “These contracts help drive Germany’s Energiewende, supporting its shift toward renewable power and global energy sustainability.”
