LS Cable & System is installing what it calls the world’s first commercial 500 kV, 90°C high-temperature HVDC cable on the Donghae–Singhamyeong transmission network project for Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO). This flagship project belongs to the Donghae–Capital Area Initiative and delivers power from the Donghae region to the Seoul Metropolitan Area, strengthening a core part of South Korea’s national power supply.

The 500 kV, 90°C HVDC cable uses a high-specification design that boosts transmission capacity by up to 50%, because the conductor operates at a higher permissible temperature than existing 70°C-class cables. KEPCO granted preliminary qualification in June after the cable successfully passed its screening, confirming the technology’s performance and reliability for large-scale grid applications.

LS Cable & System is the only South Korean company with proven experience in both submarine and underground HVDC projects, and it is supplying all HVDC cable for this project. The company has already delivered key domestic HVDC links, including Jeju–Jindo, Jeju–Wando, and Bukdangjin–Godeok, and now leverages that track record to support this large-capacity transmission route.

The company views commercialization experience as essential to maintaining grid stability in HVDC projects and plans to expand its role in major projects at home and abroad. LS Cable & System is preparing to participate actively in initiatives such as the West Coast HVDC Energy Highway, the Donghae–Capital Area Phase 2 project, and European programs including the TenneT HVDC development.
