Nokia Agrees to Divest Non-Core Submarine Cable Business
Nokia announced plans to sell Alcatel Submarine Networks (ASN)—a global leader in undersea cable systems—to the French State, represented by the Agence des participations de l’État (APE). The company entered into a put option agreement that transfers a majority stake in ASN while keeping a smaller share to ensure a stable handover.
According to Nokia’s press release, this move aligns with its strategy to focus on core technology segments. By divesting ASN, Nokia can further concentrate resources on its network infrastructure and cloud-based digital services. If approvals move forward as expected, the deal could close by the end of the year.

Headquartered in Nozay, Île-de-France, with a primary manufacturing plant in Calais, ASN ranks among the world’s top submarine cable producers. The company has installed more than 800,000 kilometers of optical submarine systems, connecting countries and continents through robust data networks. Furthermore, ASN plays a key role in advancing global internet connectivity and undersea communication reliability.

Leadership Confirms Confidence in Future Growth
“This is an incredibly exciting moment for ASN,” said Alain Biston, President and CEO of ASN. “The French State’s ownership gives us a strong foundation to grow. Nokia’s involvement supports a smooth transition for customers, suppliers, and partners.”
Under the agreement, Nokia will retain a 20% ownership stake during a transition period. The sale is valued at €350 million, though with company debt included, some reports estimate the deal’s net value near €100 million.

Nokia said the decision followed detailed discussions with stakeholders. “The French State will act as a stable long-term owner and steward of critical infrastructure,” the company stated. This approach ensures business continuity for ASN’s employees, customers, and partners during the change.

ASN’s history stretches back to 1858 with the founding of the Submarine Telegraph Company (STC). Alcatel Cable acquired STC in 1993 and reorganized its submarine operations into Alcatel Submarine Networks in 1994. In 2015, ASN became part of Nokia through its acquisition of Alcatel-Lucent, extending its legacy in global telecommunications innovation.
