New copper upcasting line in Durango

COFICAB Americas upgraded its cable capabilities in Mexico by launching copper upcasting at one of its nine regional plants. The Durango facility now produces its own copper to support automotive wire and cable operations across North America.

A recent company announcement highlighted that the Durango plant has started in‑house copper production for the first time. The new UPCAST Oy line from Finland marks a major step toward greater manufacturing autonomy and stronger supply stability. COFICAB has already ordered a second upcasting line to expand this capability.

Circular economy and supply chain control

COFICAB explains that in‑house copper production helps close the loop on its supply chain. This integration supports circular economy principles by cutting waste, boosting efficiency and lowering natural resource consumption. It also preserves consistent, high‑quality raw material input.

Strategic role of Durango and Juárez

The Durango operation serves as COFICAB Americas’ headquarters for eight production units and an R&D center in the region. In 2018, the company invested $50 million to launch its Ciudad Juárez plant, now one of COFICAB’s largest global sites. That facility supplies automotive harness wire to OEM and tier‑one customers across the Americas.

Integrated manufacturing for automotive customers

With its upcasting investment, COFICAB joins a select group of cable manufacturers that integrate material sourcing with finished cable production. By using its own copper and shipping finished wire and cable from Mexico, the company can better support tight lead times and demanding quality standards. This approach benefits automotive and industrial customers in North and South America.

Building a sustainable regional footprint

This ninth plant in the Americas reinforces COFICAB’s role as a trusted, forward‑looking partner focused on sustainable growth. Its footprint in Durango and Juárez places capacity close to harness makers and OEM supply chains, supporting program launches and just‑in‑time delivery for regional platforms
