LS Cable & System has successfully completed a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) submarine cable project connecting Wando and Jeju Island, South Korea. The $160 million Wando-Jeju HVDC project covers approximately 90 kilometers under the sea, linking Wando, Jeollanam-do, to Jeju Island’s power grid. This milestone marks the company’s largest submarine cable project since the Jeju 2-linked contract in 2009.
This project represents South Korea’s first use of voltage-type HVDC technology, a groundbreaking system that enables real-time control of electricity flow and fast restoration of power during failures. The new submarine cables enhance the stability of Jeju’s energy supply by increasing the amount of electricity transmitted between the island and the mainland.
LS Cable & System emphasized that only a few companies in Europe and Japan have commercialized HVDC submarine cable systems, while LS Cable remains the sole provider in South Korea. The project showcases the strength of national collaboration, with domestic partners such as LS Marine Solution, major construction firms, and KEPCO (Korea Electric Power Corporation).
Kim Hyung-won, head of LS Cable & System’s Energy and Construction Division, highlighted the project as a “Team Korea” success, achieved through seamless cooperation between leading Korean companies. This accomplishment reinforces South Korea’s position as a leader in next-generation power transmission and undersea cable innovation.
