LS Cable & System HVDC Submarine Cable Expansion Strengthens Asian Market Position
LS Cable & System (LS C&S) has completed construction of its fifth submarine cable plant in Donghae-si, Gangwon-do, marking a major leap in South Korea’s subsea energy infrastructure. The new facility increases LS C&S’s high-voltage direct current (HVDC) submarine cable production capacity by more than four times.
With this expansion, LS Cable & System now operates the largest HVDC cable production facility in Asia. The company expects the new capability to boost its competitiveness in delivering large-scale offshore and global energy projects.
Unlocking Turnkey Offshore Capabilities
The expanded facility aligns with LS Cable & System’s broader strategy to offer turnkey solutions, managing every stage from production to construction. The company said the new plant, together with a forthcoming HVDC cable-laying vessel being developed by its affiliate, LS Marine Solution, positions it to execute full-scale EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) operations worldwide.
“Combined with LS Marine Solution’s HVDC cable vessel, this expansion marks a key step in enabling LS Cable & System to manage end-to-end offshore power transmission projects efficiently,” the company stated.
Technology Upgrades Driving the LS Cable & System HVDC Submarine Cable Expansion
The new plant includes a vertical continuous vulcanization (VCV) production line, which enhances manufacturing precision while ensuring greater supply stability for submarine cables. This addition significantly improves operational efficiency and consistency, vital for long-distance HVDC connections.
Moreover, the HVDC cable market continues to grow rapidly as more regions shift toward renewable energy integration and long-distance power transmission. However, due to the complex manufacturing process and high infrastructure requirements, only a handful of companies — primarily in Europe, Japan, and now South Korea — can produce advanced HVDC cables at scale.
Expanding Marine and Installation Capabilities
LS Marine Solution’s 10,000-ton HVDC cable-laying vessel, currently under construction, will enable the LS Group to handle the entire lifecycle of subsea cable projects. Once operational, the vessel will allow the company to manufacture, transport, and install long-length HVDC cables globally.
As a result, LS Cable & System will strengthen its leadership in the global HVDC cable market, offering integrated solutions that combine technical excellence, delivery reliability, and end-to-end project management.
