Nexans and SSEN Transmission Partner on Orkney-Dounreay Cable Link

Nexans signed an agreement with SSEN Transmission to reserve production capacity for the Nexans SSEN Transmission cable link. This new connection will strengthen the energy link between Orkney and Dounreay in the Scottish Highlands.

Strengthening Scotland’s Renewable Grid

The capacity reservation marks a major step forward in improving Scotland’s electricity infrastructure. Nexans will supply and install about 100 km of 220 kV subsea and land cables. The companies expect to sign the full contract by the second quarter of 2024, paving the way for delivery soon after.

As the Orkney Islands continue expanding renewable projects, more transmission capacity is essential. This cable link will enable excess green energy from Orkney to flow directly into the Scottish power network, helping meet the nation’s clean energy goals.

A Major Milestone for Nexans and SSEN Transmission

“This agreement is an important milestone for Nexans,” said Pascal Radue, Executive Vice President of Nexans. “We look forward to working closely with SSEN Transmission on a project that plays a key role in the expansion of renewable energy across the UK.”

Radue added that the Orkney project highlights Nexans’ dedication to advancing electrification and renewable energy while supporting regional economic growth.

Building a Sustainable Future

Through this partnership, Nexans reinforces its leadership in high-voltage subsea and land cable systems. The company continues to deliver major transmission projects across Europe, helping countries accelerate the shift toward smarter, greener energy networks.

The Nexans SSEN Transmission cable link demonstrates how collaboration and innovation can drive sustainable energy progress in the UK and beyond.
