New Submarine Cable Facility in Kaohsiung

NKT HV Cables AB, part of the NKT Group, and Walsin Lihwa Corporation have broken ground on a new submarine cable manufacturing plant in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. The facility will produce high‑ and medium‑voltage offshore power cables to serve Taiwan’s fast‑growing wind energy market.

Expanding Offshore Cable Production

The joint venture, Walsin Energy Cable System Co., Ltd., plans to complete construction by 2025 and begin full operations by 2027. Once finished, it will become Taiwan’s first plant dedicated to submarine cable production. This marks a major milestone in the nation’s renewable energy development.

The factory will cover 233,888 square meters of land and include nearly 60,000 square meters of building space. It will specialize in export and inter‑array cables, which connect offshore wind turbines to the mainland power grid.

Partnering for Technology and Growth

This project combines NKT’s expertise in advanced cable technology with Walsin Lihwa’s strong industrial and manufacturing base. Together, the companies aim to provide efficient, cost‑effective, and reliable cable solutions that support Asia’s offshore wind growth.

Founded in 1966, Walsin Lihwa operates manufacturing sites in TaiwanChinathe United StatesItalyMalaysia, and Indonesia. With more than 10,000 employees, the company brings decades of experience to the renewable energy supply chain.

Supporting Taiwan’s Clean Energy Goals

“Local cable production ensures a stable supply for offshore wind projects and strengthens Taiwan’s energy resilience,” said Yu‑Lon Chiao, Chairman of Walsin Lihwa. “We’re proud to partner with NKT to deliver high‑quality, competitive submarine cables to developers across the region.”

Will Hendrikx, COO and Deputy CEO of NKT, added, “Our partnership with Walsin will help build a trusted local leader in submarine cable manufacturing and accelerate Taiwan’s clean energy transition.”

Strengthening the Renewable Energy Supply Chain

When complete, the new Kaohsiung facility will improve supply reliability and reduce lead times for offshore wind projects. The investment establishes a key foundation for Taiwan’s renewable energy future, creating local expertise and supporting sustainable growth for years ahead.
