Prysmian Group has won the “Quick & Simple Substation” innovation challenge from Dutch grid operators Alliander, Enexis, and Stedin. The company beat 13 competing submissions with a scalable medium-voltage (MV) substation solution that supports faster grid deployment.
The challenge focused on practical methods to strengthen Europe’s power grid as electricity demand rises. Prysmian’s concept targets faster installation, easier deployment, and repeatable designs that utilities can standardize across many sites.
Prysmian’s winning idea uses a plug-and-play MV cable system with flexible, prefabricated cables and plug-in connections. This design simplifies substation work, cuts on-site time, and enables quicker, technician-friendly installation.
Operators will first deploy the solution in the Netherlands, then consider broader international use. Prysmian says the template can help hundreds of power networks speed grid upgrades and improve resilience worldwide.
