Prysmian Expands Italy’s Energy Network
Prysmian Group secured a €630 million contract from Terna SpA, Italy’s transmission system operator, to build the Adriatic Link submarine cable project. The project will connect Abruzzo and Marche, strengthening Italy’s national power grid and supporting its clean energy goals.
Key Details of the Adriatic Link
The Adriatic Link runs 250 km, including 210 km of submarine cables and 40 km of underground connections linking each landing point to regional substations. Prysmian will design, manufacture, install, and commission the HVDC interconnection. The link will carry 1,000 MW of electricity, improving transmission between Italy’s north and south.
Local Production and Advanced Equipment
Prysmian will produce submarine cables with XLPE insulation at its plant in Arco Felice, Italy. It will also manufacture underground cables with P‑Laser insulation in Gron, France. The company has invested heavily in Arco Felice, turning it into a technology hub for submarine cable systems in Europe.
Two specialized vessels—the Leonardo da Vinci and the Monna Lisa—will lay the cables. Installation should finish during the first half of 2028.
Strengthening Partnerships and Grid Capacity
“This contract reflects the strong partnership between Terna and Prysmian,” said Hakan Ozmen, EVP Projects BU at Prysmian. He explained that the project uses state‑of‑the‑art Italian cable technology and aligns with the Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC).
The new connection will improve Italy’s grid reliability and help reduce carbon emissions. It will also reinforce Italy’s growing role as a Mediterranean power hub.
Driving Europe’s Energy Transition
With this deal, Prysmian’s Projects Business Unit surpassed €10 billion in orders for 2025, reflecting strong demand for sustainable energy infrastructure.
By combining advanced technology and local expertise, Prysmian continues to power a smarter, interconnected energy future for Europe.
