Elcowire signed a 15-year agreement with Meva Energy to transform its Helsingborg plant into what it calls the world’s greenest cable manufacturing facility. Under the deal, Meva Energy will supply 9 MW of renewable biogas and also design, own and operate an on-site energy plant at the site. This partnership replaces fossil gas with fossil-free energy in Elcowire’s production process and therefore sets a new benchmark for sustainable metallurgy.
Elcowire explains that it wants to act as a strategic, long-term and sustainable partner for companies driving the global electrification transition. Consequently, it offers copper products with a much lower carbon footprint than conventional alternatives, helping customers meet strict climate targets more efficiently. The company focuses on supplying wire-rod based copper solutions that serve essential roles in electrical and infrastructure industries, and this remains its true core mission.
Elcowire operates five business units—rod, rail, high-voltage, specials and wire and cable—at facilities in Sweden and Germany. In 2022, it further expanded by acquiring the copper wire, rod and strands business of Germany’s KME, which strengthened its European presence. With annual production of about 300,000 metric tons, Elcowire ranks among the largest European manufacturers of copper wire rod, wires, stranded conductors, profiles, overhead catenary systems, aluminum conductors and rectangular wire for electrical applications.
The company employs around 400 people and bases its headquarters in Helsingborg, Sweden. Moreover, Elcowire forms one of seven businesses within the family-owned Liljedahl Group, which focuses on long-term industrial ownership and sustainable value creation.
