Taihan Completes First Phase of New Submarine Cable Plant
Taihan Cable & Solution (Taihan) recently completed the first phase of submarine cable plant 1 in the Godae district of the Asan National Industrial Complex in Dangjin-si, Chungcheongnam-do, South Korea. This step significantly strengthens Taihan’s role in offshore wind and subsea power cable projects.
At the ceremony, executives from Taihan and Hoban Group—which acquired the former Taihan Electric Wire in March—joined the event. They toured the new production line, officially launched operations, and, in addition, delivered speeches that highlighted the plant’s strategic importance.
Inter-Array Cable Production for Offshore Wind
Submarine cable plant 1 covers about 44,800 sq m behind Godae Pier at Pyeongtaek’s Dangjin Port. The project is progressing in two phases, and Taihan now focuses the completed first step on inter-array cable production for offshore wind projects.
After a series of tests and prototype runs, Taihan plans to ramp up full-scale operations. The company will first produce inter-array cables for the Yeonggwang Nakwol offshore wind power project, where it secured a major contract last December. This contract further strengthens Taihan’s offshore wind cable portfolio.
Taihan Vice Chairman Song Jong-min said the company will speed up construction of both the second step of submarine cable plant 1 and submarine cable plant 2, showing a clear long-term commitment to subsea cables.
Second Phase and New Submarine Cable Plant Plans
The second step of submarine cable plant 1 will produce export cables, and Taihan targets completion by the first half of 2025. As a result, the expanded facility will support larger offshore wind and interconnection projects.
Meanwhile, Taihan is planning a second submarine cable plant that will include Vertical Continuous Vulcanization (VCV) lines for export cables and HVDC cables. The company is currently in the final stages of reviewing the site, and this plant will play a key role in future high-capacity transmission projects.
Taihan Wins Three Major U.S. Power Grid Projects
In addition to its domestic investments, Taihan Cable & Solution secured three significant power grid projects in the U.S. valued at approximately $93.5 million. These wins further expand Taihan’s footprint in the North American power infrastructure market.
The projects mark a major milestone for the company, which specializes in advanced cables and turnkey solutions for transmission, distribution, and infrastructure. One project focuses on ultra-high voltage (UHV) cable, while the other two involve medium-to-low voltage cable supply.
Supporting Semiconductor and Grid Upgrade Projects
The ultra-high voltage project, worth around $32.4 million, is located in the eastern U.S. and will deliver 345 kV cable for a new semiconductor plant in New York State. This project supports the region’s growing semiconductor manufacturing capacity and long-term power reliability.
The other two projects lie in the Los Angeles area of California. One of these contracts is a long-term agreement to supply medium-to-low voltage cables over three years, supporting local grid reinforcement and urban infrastructure upgrades.
With these latest awards, TC&S has now secured over $237 million in orders in the U.S. market. Ongoing U.S. government initiatives and investments to upgrade and expand the national power grid further increase the strategic value of Taihan’s projects and long-term partnerships.
